The Costs of an EMR System Implementation

Setting a budget for the EMR software you would be purchasing requires the complete understanding of the costs which are associated with the purchase. Although you might think that all you need to pay for would be the actual price of the EMR software you would be buying, there are several other costs that you need to factor in as you determine your budget. One of the costs that you need to consider would be the cost of the hardware and software upgrade necessary for the proper implementation of the EMR system you have chosen. Because most EMR software have certain system requirements, there may be the need to do some upgrades in your current hardware and software. The cost of this would usually depend on how outdated your current system and how large your facility is. The older your system is and the bigger your facility is, the more expensive the upgrade costs may be.

To make sure that you would only be spending upgrade costs which are within your budget, it would be best to check out whether or not the EMR program you are planning to purchase is compatible with your system. There is also the cost of training the individuals or the personnel who would be using the EMR system. You may need to bring in a trainer or an employee of the EMR vendor to teach and test your staff about the EMR system you would be implementing. Generally, there would just be a one-time fee that you need to pay and the training can be done over a period of several weeks or months, depending on how complex your system is and how many individuals need to be trained. The cost of the implementation of EMR software is another cost that have to be considered. When implementing systems that make use of programs that manage electronic medical records or EMRs, there may be a need for a short-term project manager who can overlook the entire process of shifting from a paper-based to an electronic system. You might also have to hire an IT expert who can check the compatibility of your existing system with the EMR software you have purchased as well as conduct regular maintenance, if it is not included in the package that you have purchased from your EMR software vendor.
