Boxing Accidents – Tyson V Holyfield

Many people are wondering how memorable the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manual Marquez  on the 12th of November 2011 will be.  It is expected that it will certainly be a memorable fight, because both seem so intent on winning.  Fights that are held in the MGM Grand in Nevada, Las Vegas, usually are important fights that many people will remember, but it seems that the most memorable fights are those whereby one or both of the fighters sustain some sort of injury. The most memorable fight has to be the one where Mike Tyson bit off his opponent’s ear.

Any Mike Tyson fight was going to be memorable, of course, as he is probably the greatest fighter to have graced the ring since Mohammed Ali.  However, he was starting to lose a great deal of popularity and in 1997 he had reached an all time low.  Again in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Tyson fought Evander Holyfield and it was clear from the start that Tyson had little control over himself.  In the third round, Tyson grabbed hold of Holyfield and bit off part of his right ear.

This move was so unexpected that the referee initially didn’t believe it, and had to be called into Holyfield’s corner to inspect the injury.  Rather than stopping the fight at that point, he deducted two points from Tyson’s score and ordered the fight to continue.  Unbelievably, in the next round, Tyson attempted to make the same move, at which point he was immediately disqualified.  This marked the end for Tyson, who was suspended for a period of time and did not receive his purse either.

The MGM Grand was in uproar after this spectacle, and police had to become involved to restore order.  Both the MGM, the boxers and the spectators are hoping that the 12th of November will not prove to be a similar performance. There a small chances for such an outburst as the two boxers seem mature enough in order not to jeopardise their career with foolish actions. Watch Pacquiao vs Marquez live and convince yourself.
