The best form of recreation for the elderly

oldpeopleAs a child we often dream of being an adult, a professional young man or woman who can live his/her life independently. But rarely do we think of how we are going to spend the latter years of our lives. Such questions as “What is life after 60” is never really a major concern for young people.

This being the case is among the reasons why most of our elderly spend their retirement days on the care centers around the state. Though these care centers are giving all their efforts to ensure that all the needs of their clients are being addressed, it is still best for immediate family members to consider the form of recreational activities that their parents or grandparents are getting.

We should understand that as an individual age, his’/her need to have purpose in life grows. They ought to have good reasons to continue living now that their children are already running their own lives.

As children, it is our responsibility to ensure that despite the decline in their physical and mental abilities brought by aging, we still make them feel that they are valued and needed at the same time.

This is the best form of recreation for the elderly . Though sports and leisure activities such as cycling, dog walking, golf, and dancing are good ways for them to spend their time, their activities should not be limited.

Giving them a sense of responsibility will help improve not just their physical, mental, and psychological abilities. It will also give them a good reason to continue living.

Nowadays there are several organizations who have win-win objectives. They help both their volunteer and their clients to improve their lives. Among these organizations are SCORE or Service Coprs of Retired Executive, Habitat for Humanity, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

We should keep in mind that though their strength have been taken by aging, their life experiences gives them an edge to be of help to the young ones. Being a volunteer also helps maintain their social skills.

But we also need to consider the fact that volunteering is not for everybody. So make sure to still include your parents in gathering and constantly ask of their opinions about matters that are family related. They would appreciate it and will surely boost their self-image. They will feel important and loved at the same time.

Lastly, spend time with them. Rather than leaving them with a care giver seven days a week, a lot a day or two to be with them. Have planned picnics or out of town with them. Visit the museum or walk with them along the park. Seat with them and go through the family albums. Talk about your family and other plans in life. These are the simple things that can make their heart smile. Remember tat nothing can make any parent happier than knowing that their children can still find time to be with them.
